Marilyn contacted us at Jackson Hole Horse Rescue five years ago about us taking in her horse "Daegyn".  He has a badly scarred front hoof and is lame.  We accepted him to our rescue. Daegyn is now 30 years old and showing his age.  He will eventually die,of old age, in our care.  Marilyn comes to Jackson occasionally to see him.  This shows the love the owner, and we at Jackson Hole Horse Rescue, have for dear old horses. Read Marilyn's plea below.  We often get emails such as this one.  Your donation helps with this kind of rescue effort.

"Hi to Jackson Hole Horse Rescue,

I’m reaching out in hopes of finding a retirement home for my 25-year-old Morgan gelding, Daegyn. He’s in perfect health aside from advancing ringbone/arthritis in hisfront pasterns.Daegyn was born and raised on a Wyoming cattle ranch and trained as a reining horse.I purchased him at 10 years old, and he’s been my trusted trail companion ever since. About four years ago, we noticed him slowing down, and two years ago, Dr. Theo Schuff (Fish Creek Veterinary) diagnosed his arthritis — likely from his reining background and an old barbed wire injury. Daegyn is sound at a walk on soft ground, medication-free, and an easy keeper. He’s wintered well on pasture with supplemental hay when needed. He’s quiet, well-mannered, great with other horses, and even takes care of novice riders — making him a wonderful companion horse. My husband and I retired and moved to Arizona two years ago, and although I’ve found him pasture here, I know he’s not as happy. Being able to bring him back to Wyoming for his retirement would mean the world. I greatly admire the work you do, and I’m willing to donate $1,200 to JH Horse Rescue if you’re able to welcome Daegyn. Dr. Schuff can provide documentation of his care and condition if needed. I would be deeply grateful for any help in giving Daegyn the retirement he deserves. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Marilyn"

Maury Jones
Known as 'Jonesy'

I am Maury Jones, “Jonesy” to my friends. Most of you know me, but you may not know that I wear several ‘hats’. One ‘hat’ is that I am Executive Director of Jackson Hole Horse Rescue. My wife, Linda, is on the Board of Directors and is a huge help in managing and running the Horse Rescue.

In 2008, Jackson Hole Regional Horse Rescue was founded. Why start a ‘horse rescue’? As an outfitter, I guided guests on horseback in the rugged mountains of Wyoming, in and near Jackson Hole, since 1983. I owned about 20 horses. But taking in old or sick/lame horses? You can’t ride them, so why?

My horse, Shadow, was the inspiration for Jackson Hole Horse Rescue.
