Built to Provide Reliable Care for Horses in Need

When horses are neglected, aging, or no longer wanted, finding a safe and responsible path forward can feel uncertain. Many people want to help but struggle to find an organization that offers consistent care and clear follow-through. Jackson Hole Horse Rescue was founded in 2008 to meet that need, creating a dependable place for horses requiring rehabilitation, placement, or lifelong sanctuary. With more than 250 horses rescued and 34 currently in care, the work is grounded in steady, long-term commitment rather than short-term solutions.

The Beginning of Jackson Hole Horse Rescue

Welcome to Jackson Hole Horse Rescue (JHHR), the oldest horse rescue organization in Wyoming. Founded in 2008 by Maurice Jones—known to many as “Jonesy”—the rescue began in the small town of Grover in Star Valley, Wyoming.

One of the very first rescues was a horse named Sunny. A man called and said, “I have two horses. I’m out of hay and out of a job. I’ve tried to sell them without success. Can you take them?” JHHR stepped in without hesitation, setting the tone for the work that continues today.

The Horse That Inspired the Mission

As more horses began to arrive, one in particular left a lasting impact—Shadow, an Arabian who became the heart behind the rescue. Over time, Shadow developed arthritis, and on March 15, 2018, Jonesy wrote:

“My good buddy Shadow died today. He was three months shy of 31 years old. The best horse I ever had. Gallop through the clouds, old buddy, until we meet again when my time is finally up.”

Shadow’s story continues to shape the mission and purpose of Jackson Hole Horse Rescue.

Where the Horses Are Today

Today, Jackson Hole Horse Rescue operates on a private ranch just west of the Jackson Hole Airport, bordering Grand Teton National Park. The ranch owner generously provides 40 acres of irrigated pasture in exchange for occasional riding experiences for visiting family and friends.

JHHR has also secured three additional irrigated pastures in Teton Valley, allowing the rescue to expand its capacity and care.

The organization currently cares for 34 horses and continues to welcome more when the right conditions allow—always with the goal of providing a safe, lasting place they can call home.
